Call for Papers

Digitizing Architecture: Formalization & Content

The Fourth International Conference of

The Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design

(ASCAAD 2009)

Organized by

Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture

College of Engineering

University of Bahrain

Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain

11-12 May 2009

Theme

CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process.

Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and global warming.

The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the new technology that cater for our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital forms and the traditional human content.

> Virtual environment technologies are now being used by a wide range of
> laboratories, industries, educational establishments and hobbyists
> around the world. With the burgeoning power of home consoles, personal
> computers and mobile devices, we are hardly limited by the power of our
> technology, but we remain limited in the expressive power and ease of
> use of our software. This is not for lack of software; there are
> dozens, perhaps hundreds of virtual environment systems in use today,
> ranging from Open Source tool kits maintained by the community through
> networked game engines, both hobbyist and commercial through to
> fully-fledged "VR" systems with very broad support for devices. However,
> this range of software is also a potential achilles heel: there is a
> huge amount of functional replication in these software, subtle and not
> so subtle architectural differences which make porting a problem, and
> incompatible libraries that can not be exchanged.
>
> In this special issue, we invite the community to reflect on what
> features and design strategies have already or should underpin virtual
> environment systems of the future. We acknowledge that the field is
> broad, and it is not our intention to spark a debate on whether there
> should be a unified architecture for VE systems. We do want to solicit
> frank discussions about what features or conventions in existing
> software have proved their worth.
>
> Thus, topics of interest would include:
> - Comparisons between software architectures or classes of architecture
> - Reports of user experience with software
> - Analyses of reusability of application code
> - Novel taxonomies of VE systems
> - Programming models for VE systems
> - Reflections of expressiveness of interaction description code
> - Issues of code distribution over multiple processors
> - Networking abstracting and issues
> - Frank discussions on the failings or flaws of an existing system
> - Approaches/experience for the integration/interoperability of
> different architectures
> - Extensibility of existing interactive application standards such as
> X3D into the VR realm
>
> We would discourage authors from sending papers that describe new
> software or architectures unless that software and the paper are based
> on a critical analysis of a problem domain and contain critiques of
> existing approaches.

Venue: Coventry University

Event theme: "Environment, Cultural Heritage, Health, Smart buildings, V-commerce and Education"

VS-GAMES 2009, Coventry, UK, March 2009

Context

The emergence of serious or non-leisure uses of games technologies and virtual worlds applications has been swift and dramatic over the last five years. As a result, there has been little time to develop the theoretical and academic rigour in the emerging field. This problem has been exacerbated by the largely technological drive of the technologies, with often little time to consider more user-centred approaches to design and use of serious applications of games and virtual world technologies. Another factor affecting the field has been the general aspects of convergence between new technologies, for example augmented reality, mobile technologies, GPS technologies, sensor technologies and social software.

Together this has presented potential for developing new technologies based upon immersive and interactive interfaces and has in parallel produced many unanswered questions in terms of the usage of the formats. As a result there is a clear need to consider new frameworks, theories, methods and design strategies for making serious applications of games and virtual world technologies more effective and useful as part of education, health and training.

Scope

The first International Conference in Games and Virtual Worlds for Serious Applications 2009(technical co-sponsorship with the IEEE Computer Society pending) aims to meet the significant challenges of the cross-disciplinary community that work around these serious application areas by bringing the community together to share case studies of practice, to present new frameworks, methodologies and theories and to begin the process of developing shared cross-disciplinary outputs. In order to achieve this main aim the conference will pioneer new methods for bringing together and supporting communities of practice emerging in themed areas beyond the duration of the conference. Using the conference as an ignition to support a wider aspiration to form and sustain a community of practice around the field. To achieve this, the team at the SGI will use innovative software called Intronetworks, which allows conference participants to create their own profile allowing them to identify like-minded and complementary skilled colleagues.

The term 'Serious Games' covers a broad range of applications from flash-based animations to totally immersive and code driven 3D environments where users interface with large volumes of data through sophisticated and interactive digital interfaces. This shift towards immersive world applications being used to support education, health and training activities mark the beginning of new challenges that offer real scope for collaborative and multi-disciplinary research solutions, and real opportunities for innovative development. We invite researchers, developers, practitioners and decision-makers working with or applying serious games in their communities to present papers in the following two main streams of the conference: games and virtual world applications for serious applications. The conference will explore games and virtual worlds in relation to:

Applications (e.g. case studies, exemplars, practice examples)
Methodologies, theories and frameworks (e.g. participatory design methods, mixed methodologies for data collection and analysis, cross-disciplinary methods)
Evaluation approaches and studies

Aims

The conference aims to ask:

In what ways are games and virtual world applications effective tools?
What cross-disciplinary approaches are emerging to support design, development and implementation of the technologies?
What role does convergence with related technologies mean for the field?
What founding theories and approaches are emerging to support the field?
How and in what ways is the participant becoming the producer of content?
What are the technologies (e.g. applications, platforms, engines) that are most effective in which areas of practice?

Topics of Interest

We are seeking contributions that advance the state of the art in the technologies available to support sustainability of serious games. The following topics in the areas of environment, cultural heritage, health, smart buildings, v-commerce and education are particularly encouraged:

- Game design
- Serious games methodologies
- User-modelling in serious games
- Pervasive gaming
- Interactivity issues
- Game modelling
- Alternate reality games
- Virtual environments
- Augmented reality
- Visualisation techniques
- Human-computer interaction
- Mobile games
- Education and learning
- Case studies in serious

Hello everyone.

As you may recall Doug Bowman ran a Siggraph BOF a few years ago on 3D user interfaces that was very successful (I believe we had about 50 people
attend).

This year, I am going to run a similar BOF at SIGGRAPH on 3D Spatial Interfaces in Video Games. As I am sure you are all aware, 3D UIs are becoming more and more prominent in video games (Wii, EyeToy, etc...). This represents a great opportunity for 3DUI and AR/VR
researchers to explore innovative approaches to video game interaction. My goal is to bring together both researchers and game developers/designers to one location to discuss interesting issues related to 3DUI in games and let people present their work in the area.

The BOF will take place on Wednesday, August 13th from 9am to 10:30am in room 307 in the Los Angeles convention center.

A significant portion of the BOF will be devoted to brief (5-minute) informal presentations on current 3DUI-related research projects, applications, and/or products related to 3DUI in games.

IMPORTANT: If you would like to present something at the BOF, please send me an email with the following information: your name, your organization, your email address, title of your presentation, 2-3 sentence description of your presentation, and URL for more information (if available). I will put all of this information on a handout that will be given to each participant in the BOF.

We will have standard AV equipment at the meeting (projector and screen). You can also bring demonstrations on a laptop if you wish - there will be a time for demos near the end of the BOF (anyone can bring a demo - not just presenters).

Please forward this notice to anyone you think might be interested who is not on these mailing lists.

Please use my UCF email address (jjl@cs.ucf.edu) when responding.

Thanks,

Joe
