CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

4th Annual IEEE Tabletops and interactive Surfaces (TIS) Conference
November 23-25, 2009
Banff, Alberta, in Western Canada
------------------------------------------------------------------

The IEEE Tabletops and interactive Surfaces (TIS) Conference is a premier
venue for presenting research in the design and use of new and emerging
tabletop and interactive surface technologies. As a new community, we
embrace the growth of the discipline in a wide variety of areas, including
innovations in TIS hardware, software, interaction design, and studies
expanding our understanding of design considerations of TIS technologies and
of their applications in modern society.

Based on the overwhelming success of the previous Tabletop/TIS workshops,
TIS 2009 is introducing some new forums, including invited Tutorials and
Interactive Posters.

TIS 2009 will bring together top researchers and practitioners who are
interested in both the technical and human aspects of TIS technology. On
behalf of the conference organizing committee, we invite you to begin
planning your submissions and participation for this year's conference!

Call for Participation Details

The use of interactive surfaces is an exciting and emerging research area.
Display technologies, such as projectors, LCD and OLED flat panels, and even
flexible display substrates, coupled with input sensors capable of enabling
direct interaction, make it reasonable to envision a not-so-distant future
in which many surfaces in our environment from tabletops, walls and floors
will function as a digital interactive display. This cross-disciplinary
domain brings together different technologies and backgrounds such as camera
and projector based systems, new display technologies, multi-touch sensing,
user interface technologies, augmented reality, computer vision, multimodal
interaction, novel input and sensing technologies, computer supported
cooperative work (CSCW), and information visualization.
The intimate size of this single-track symposium provides an ideal venue for
leading researchers and practitioners to exchange research results and
implementation experiences. We encourage submissions on (but not limited to)
the following topic areas as they relate to interactive tabletops and
surfaces:
* Applications
* Gesture-based interfaces
* Multi-modal interfaces
* Tangible interfaces
* Novel interaction techniques
* Data handling/exchange on large interactive surfaces
* Data presentation on large interactive surfaces
* User-interface technology

CALL FOR PAPERS

IEEE Virtual Reality 2009 Workshop
Towards Adaptation and Personalization in 3D User Interfaces
to Enhance User Interaction and Accessibility (AP-3DUI)

March 14th, 2009
Lafayette, Louisiana, USA
http://www.edm.uhasselt.be/ap-3dui2009/
---------------------------------------------

Improving 3D User Interaction (3DUIs) is actively researched, yet desirable interaction levels have not been achieved. A part of this can be attributed to existing interface inflexibility with behaviors invariant of the factors of the individual user, their preferences or their tasks, which affect performance. Some example factors, which play a larger role in 3DUIs as compared to 2DUIs, are user arm length, user height, handedness, eye dominance, color differentiation, technique preferences, task approaches, computer and game experience, accessibility issues, cybersickness, susceptibility to fatigue, spatial aptitudes and other cognitive factors to name a few. As the physical, mental and experiential factors of users that influence 3DUIs are diverse, 3DUIs designed to be optimal for all users result in interaction optimal for no single user. Adaptation and personalization are envisioned to play an important role in the next generation of user interfaces.

To achieve adaptation and personalization, existing approaches in several research communities are of significant interest. Intelligent interfaces that take advantage of context and assist in user tasks have been actively researched. Multimodal approaches incorporate multiple input modalities for user interaction. Incorporating influential factors or allowing users to tailor the interface based on their preferences improves their performance on tasks. Addressing accessibility issues remove interface obstacles for disadvantaged users. Systematic incorporation of these approaches will clearly improve 3DUIs in terms of performance, subjectivity and access.

Within the domain of this workshop, the following topics in 3D user interfaces include, but are not limited to:

* Application areas for adaptive and personalized interaction
* Intelligent user interfaces
* Adaptive 3D interaction techniques
* Adaptation of Multimodal Feedback
* Personalized interaction
* User modeling and Adaptation
* User diversity in VR applications
* Universal access interfaces
* Authoring approaches to adaptive and personalized 3DUIs
* Effects of gaming and experience in 3DUIs

CALL FOR PAPERS

IEEE Virtual Reality 2009 Workshop
Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments (PIVE)

March 14th, 2009
Lafayette, Louisiana, USA
http://pive.uni-muenster.de
--------------------------------------------

Virtual environments (VEs) provide humans with synthetic worlds in which they can interact with their virtual surrounding. However, while interacting in a VE system, humans are still located in the physical setup: they move through a laboratory space or may touch real-world objects. This duality of being in the real world while receiving visual, haptic, or aural information from the virtual world places users in a unique situation, forcing them to integrate (or separate) stimuli from potentially different sources simultaneously. The fact that a person's perception of a virtual reality environment can vary enormously from the perception of real world environments opens up a broad field of potential applications that take advantage of perceptual illusions. Such illusions arise from misinterpretation by the brain of sensory information:

* Visual illusions exploit the fact that vision usually dominates proprioceptive and vestibular senses. Based on this, redirected walking can force users to be guided on physical paths, which may vary from the paths on which they perceive they are walking in the virtual world.
* Haptic illusions may give users the impression of feeling virtual objects by touching real world props. The physical objects that represent and provide passive haptic feedback for the virtual objects may vary in size, weight, or surface from the virtual counterparts without users observing the discrepancy.
* Acoustic illusions may result in users perceive (self-)motion (such as vection) when no such visual motion is being supplied.

Papers should address one or more of the following topics, although authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related topics are also welcome.

* Visual, auditory and haptic perception thresholds
* Multisensory conflicts
* Illusion of presence and immersion
* Perception-inspired interfaces
* Psychophysiological studies
* Scene interpretation and cognition
* Pseudo- and passive haptics

The IEEE VR 2009 Workshop on Perceptual Illusions in Virtual Environments is the first international workshop focused on the topic of perceptual illusions in VEs and will be held to foster discussions among participants and to provide an intensive exchange between industrial and academic researchers working on various perception research problems. The workshop will last for a half-day.

Important Dates and Submission
-----------------------------------------------
* Research and position papers: February 16th, 2009
* Review decisions: February 26th, 2009
* Camera-ready copy due: March 2nd, 2009
* Workshop Date: March 14th, 2009

The workshop solicits research and position papers. Research papers (up to 6 pages, but typically 4-6 pages) should describe research results, positions papers (up to 2 pages, typically 1-2 pages) should contain preliminary results of research or design work within the scope of perceptual illusions. Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings with ISBN number.
